A Level Chemistry Revision "General Formula"
You can find all my A Level Chemistry videos fully indexed at https://www.freesciencelessons.co.uk/a-level-revision-videos/a-level-chemistry/
In this video, we explore the general formula of a homologous series. First, I discuss what is meant by the general formula. I then show you how to determine the general formula of a homologous series using the alkanes and alkenes as examples. Finally, I get you to determine the general formula of the chloroalkane and the alcohol homologous series.
This video is aimed at the UK A Level Chemistry specifications. Students studying International A Level Chemistry will need to check their specification.

Writing a General Formula of an Arithmetic Sequence
This algebra video tutorial explains how to write a general formula of an arithmetic sequence. It explains how to see the patterns in to the write a general equation for the sequence. Most of the sequences are arithmetic sequences. Examples include fractions and terms with alternating signs. This video provides the general formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence. This tutorial contains plenty of examples and practice problems.

Finding the formula for a sequence of terms
👉 Learn how to write the rule of a sequence given a sequence of numbers. A sequence is a list of numbers/values exhibiting a defined pattern. A number/value in a sequence is called a term of the sequence.
To write the explicit formula of a sequence of numbers, we first determine whether each term of the sequence is obtained by adding/subtracting a common value to the preceding term or whether each term of the sequence is obtained by multiplying a pre-determined value, called the common ratio, to the preceding term or neither.
For the first case, the sequence is an arithmetic sequence and we can write the explicit formula by plugging the common difference into the arithmetic sequence explicit formula. For the second case, the sequence is a geometric sequence and we can write the explicit ...

How to Derive the General Formula for solving Quadratic equation.
The general formula for solving quadratic equation is actually derived using the steps involved in completing the square. It stems from the fact that any quadratic function or equation of the form y = ax² + bx + c
y=ax²+bx+c can be solved for its roots. The “roots” of the quadratic equation are the points at which the graph of a quadratic function (the graph is called the parabola) hits, crosses or touches the x-axis known as the x-intercepts.
So to find the roots or x-intercepts of y=ax²+bx+c
y=ax²+bx+c, we need to let y = 0.
That means we have: ax²+bx+c=0
From here, we are going to apply the usual steps involved in completing the square to arrive at the quadratic formula.
Steps on How to Derive the Quadratic Formula
Step 1: Let y = 0 in the general form of the quadratic function y = a...

So to find the roots or x-intercepts of y=ax²+bx+c
y=ax²+bx+c, we need to let y = 0.
That means we have: ax²+bx+c=0
From here, we are going to apply the usual steps involved in completing the square to arrive at the quadratic formula.
Steps on How to Derive the Quadratic Formula
Step 1: Let y = 0 in the general form of the quadratic function y = ax² + bx + c
ax²+bx+c =0 where a, b, and c are real numbers but a is not =0.
Step 2: Move the constant c to the right side of the equation by subtracting it from both sides: ax²+bx=-c
Step 3: Divide the entire equation by the coefficient of x² which is a
x²+bx/a= -c/a
Step 4: Now identify the coefficient of x which is b/a
Step 5: Divide it by 2 and raise it to the 2nd power. Then simplify it further.
(b/2a)²=b²/4a²
Step 6: Add the output of step #5 to both sides of the equation.
x² + bx/a + b²/4a² = b²/4a² - c/a
Step 7: Simplify the right side of the equation. = (b²-4ac)/4a²
Step 8: Express the trinomial on the left side of the equation as the square of a binomial. (x+b/2a)²
Step 9: Take the square root of both sides of the equation to eliminate the exponent 2 of the binomial.
x+b/2a = ±√[(b²-4ac)/4a²]
Step 10: Keep the variable x on the left side by subtracting both sides b/2a
x = -b/2a ± √(b²-4ac)/2a
Step 11: Simplify and we are done!
x = [-b±√(b²-4ac)]/2a
